Thread: Zebra 2844-z stops halfway printing barcode then windows 'ding' and printer offline

  1. #1
Have been using shiprush for years, and very pleased, however recently have had a problem with my zebra 2844-z label printer.

Specifically, the label prints halfway through the barcode, and then stops, and then there is a Windows system 'ding' and the printer goes offline from windows. The label then feeds (blank after halfway printed barcode) and then feeds a blank label and then another Windows system 'ding' and printer is back online. If I try to reprint the label, it prints the same way. Also, same problem printing test label from Shiprush.

I have reinstalled drivers using current zebra drivers and also current Seagull driver. I have tried recalibrating using
    four flash
    http://www.zfirm.com/knowledge_bases.../srxa-0492.txt

    and powerup
    http://www.zfirm.com/knowledge_bases.../srxa-0413.txt

I have used the generic driver described here:
    http://www.zfirm.com/Product_Documen...stallation.htm

The printer type is correctly set to zebra 2844-z in shiprush.

I have upgraded printer firmware to most recent from zebra: V45.11.7ZA and this correctly shows on the config printout.

The problem that I am having is similar to that discussed in this thread:
    http://forums.zfirm.com/printthread.php?t=5343

but there is no solution offered in that thread. (also my test labels have same problem as the 'real' labels.

Printer works fine with 'Dazzle' (endicia.com postage software), and correctly prints bar coded endicia.

    I'm using Windows 7 ultimate.

    Thanks for any help!!

And this has been printing with this printer, without issue, until recently? Changes done to ShipRush (update, upgrade)?

It started going buggy about two months ago (possibly with a shiprush update?), previously it was printing fine.

I have been able to use the labels with half barcode printed, but it prints a blank label after each (so wastes labels) and also leaves off the actual numeric tracking number which is not great as sometimes they have trouble scanning the barcode.

It is as if there is an embedded control character in the barcode that causes the printer to stop printing and go offline, but that is purely a non expert uninformed guess. It stops printing and goes offline at the end of a barcoded line, never mid-line.

Also, I am currently printing the labels in reverse, if I print non-reversed, it still stops mid bar code, but since the barcode is then at the top of the label, 90% of the label remains unprinted, instead of vice versa.

    Thanks!

Have you connected the printer via a diff port (diff USB port) or used a diff usb cable?

I have not yet tried this, but I will try both suggestions and then report back.

I have not had a chance to test the cables or ports (yet), but here is another piece of the puzzle (which I just noticed). It does not stop at precisely the same point in each print, even when printing the same labels.

This is three separate prints of the same label:

Makes me wonder if it might be a printhead overheating error or something similar
    http://forums.zfirm.com/showthread.p...x-print-issues

although it seems odd that it ALWAYS stops mid bar code (even if printing non-reversed), and always only prints one partial label, and then goes offline, etc.

I may try to clean the printhead and see if this helps. Also, I vaguely remember reading something about setting density to 10 instead of 15 (and I think mine may be set to 15 based on config printout).

I will do port and cable test later. Thanks for the suggestion!

For this symptom, the first step I would take is to recalibrate the printer:

    Thank you for using ShipRush!

I did try recalibrating. So far so good (successfully printed two complete labels)!
I hope that this solves my problems, and if not, I will be back with an update.

    THANKYOU!!

Are you stating that recalibrating, again, fixed the issue, or did some other step resolve?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. Some of the attempts at recalibration did not seem to go according the the manual. Specifically, tried power up while holding feed and releasing on red/amber alternating flashing, and this resulted in a 'freeze' at a solid red with no labels feeding. Retried with, power up while holding feed, and waited through red/amber, and then 1 green flash, 2 green flash, and 3 green flash and released.

Neither seemed to have an effect, however, upon printing test labels, two labels printed correctly. I have not wanted to disturb what seems to be a functioning printer (knock wood), so for now, I am just going to keep using it until the problem resurfaces (hopefully it wont).

If it does resurface, I will attempt recalibration, which seems to have worked, using a more careful approach in order to precisely define the 'fix'.

Hopefully, I won't be back anytime soon, so I hope you have a great holiday and thanks for the help!
