Thread: Setting up SQL ODBC connection string

  1. #1
    This might need to be fleshed out better in the documentation or perhaps I missed it. I need a walkthrough on setting up the connecction string for a SQL connection.
    We use an ODBC connection on a shipping computer to provide for our other shipping software. Most of that was point and click but with yours I need to provide the string.

    I tried this but got an error below
    Provider=MSDASQL;Driver=SQL Server;Server=mysqlserver;Database=mysqldb
    ==========
    The .Net Framework Data Provider for OLEDB (System.Data.OleDb) does not support the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (MSDASQL). Use the .Net Framework Data Provider for ODBC (System.Data.Odbc).
    ==========

    So confusing. Any help would be appreciated.

    What kind of database are you trying to access?

    Can you review the ODBC connection created for the other software for clues as well (what provider is being used, etc)?

    Once we have more details, we can give you more direction on this

    Thank you,

    Hi Sys,
    It is a SQL ODBC connection. The other connections were done by the UPS/Fedex techs to connect through their own scripting. It is building the connection string I am having the problem with so far. Not sure who the provider should be. Your site is saying .net but I do not think that is installed and am unsure which to install.

    If this is a MS SQL database, the provider should be Provider=MSSQL, if you need to enter that value to begin with (there are variables here)

    For my SQL connection, to a MSSQL Server I have running here:
    Server=GP10;Password=pass@word1;User ID=sa;Database=RMSSample

    You might be trying to add more information than what is needed for connection

    For my SQL connection, to a MSSQL Server I have running here: (not a MYSQL database....my own SQL connection I have setup in my test environment)
    Server=GP10;Password=pass@word1;User ID=sa;Database=RMSSample

    If this is MSSQL, you probably don't need to declare the Provider, as shown in my example above

    Thank you,

    When trying without a provider I get the error
    An OLE DB Provider was not specified in the ConnectionString. An example would be, 'Provider=SQLOLEDB;'.

    Here's an example:

    Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=serverName;Initial Catalog=databaseName;User ID=MyUserID;Password=MyPassword

    SO ODBC connection tested good and all. But when clikcing on shippments all our test order is not showing. The dev team put in the select statments and all looks correct on their end. Any ideas?
